BBM: Front-liners must get the first vaccine shot

RECOGNIZING the proverbial supreme sacrifice of the health workers and other front-liners like the military and police in the battle against COVID-19, former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Romualdez Marcos Jr. has suggested that they should get the first shot of vaccine if it is proven safe and effective.

Marcos explained that once a vaccine is available, it should be administered first to those who are “in the highest risk” as the doctors, nurses, medical technologists, administrative staff, drivers and maintenance personnel in the hospital, soldiers manning the outposts and policemen running after the quarantine violators.

“Lahat tayo ay nananalangin na magkaroon na ng bakuna kontra COVID-19. Ang kabuoan ng kakayanan ng lahat ng mga dalubhasa at eskperto sa mundo ay ngayo’y nakatutok sa paghahanap ng solusyong ito,” Marcos said.

In his VBlog over the weekend, Marcos noted that the whole world was stunned by the report that Russia has emerged as the apparent winner in the race of inventing a vaccine on COVID-19.

He said of the 165 candidate vaccines, there are only eight that have reached Phase 3 in their trials, including the first from Wuhan, China seconded by the University of Oxford where Marcos once studied.

Last July 20, the news website Social.Techcrunch.com reported that “two early trials, one from the University of Oxford, and one from a group of researchers in Wuhan funded in part by the National Key R&D Programme of China. Both early trials showed efficacy in increasing the presence of antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that leads to COVID-19, and also indicated that these prospective vaccines were safe to administer based on available information.”

“Sa kanilang galing, talino, at pagpupunyagi sa pinaka-kritikal na trabahong ito, may pag-asa ang sangkatauhan,” Marcos stressed.

When asked by popular radio/TV broadcaster Raffy Tulfo on his reaction that President Duterte had volunteered to be the first one to be injected with the Sputnik  V vaccine from Russia, Marcos responded with a hearty laugh: “E kung maipakita na talagang effective ito at safe, e kung mauuna si Pangulong Duterte, pangalawa na ako.”
