JUST LIKE KNOCKING OUT the “systemic corruption” at the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth), Senator Manny Pacquiao floored its proposed privatization and instead suggested that it should be overhauled and filled up with people who are honest, dedicated, and competent.
The boxing champion-turned-lawmaker on Friday also echoed the clamor of several concerned sectors that those proven corrupt officials of the agency should be thrown in jail.
“The best thing is to jail its corrupt officials instead of privatizing PhilHealth. Privatizing it could even do more damage to our social health care system,” Pacquiao stressed.
He issued the statement on the heels of a bill filed by Marikina City Representative Stella Quimbo empowering the President to privatize PhilHealth.
Pacquiao explained that privatizing will not guarantee that it will make PhilHealth more efficient and more reliable considering the country’s dismal record on privatized government assets.
The senator added that privatizing PhilHealth will go against its very purpose of providing socialized health care for all Filipinos, especially the poor.
“Sa oras na ginawang pribado ang PhilHealth, tiyak na tataas din ang bayarin ng mga miyembro dahil kailangan na nitong kumita gaya ng ibang mga pribadong health insurance providers,” Pacquiao said.
He expressed apprehensions that the proposed PhilHealth privatization will just “shield” its officers from corruption and plunder cases.
