ASG unit sub-leader and bombmaker Mudzrimar “Mundi” Sawadjaan
MANILA – The Armed Forces of the Philippines on Thursday claimed unit sub-leader and bombmaker Mudzrimar “Mundi” Sawadjaan was the one who masterminded the twin suicide bombings in Jolo, Sulu that killed at least 15 and injured at least 75.
So said Thursday AFP Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) chief Major General Corleto Vinluan Jr during an interview with DZMM.
“Iyong mastermind same pa rin siya, si Mundi Sawadjaan (The mastermind is the same, it’s Mundi Sawadjaan),” Vinluan said.
The Westmincom commander was referring to the March 24 twin blasts and also the January 2019 Jolo Cathedral bombings that killed 20 and injured at least 100.
Mundi Sawadjaan is allegedly the go-to guy of the AGS when it comes to bomb making. He is the nephew of Hatib Hajan Sawadjaan, the leader of the ASG faction that associates itself with the Islamic State (ISIS).
Shortly after the blasts on Monday, US-based group SITE Intelligence that monitors online communications among Muslim militant groups, claimed the IS East Asia province had issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attacks.
The military is still tracking down both Mundi and Hatib Hajan in Mindanao.
