MANILA – The Bureau of Customs (BOC) will abide by President Rodrigo Duterte’s order to implement a revamp of officials and personnel in various ports in the country to improve the bureau’s performance, its spokesperson said Tuesday.

“As instructed by the President, the BOC shall continue the evaluation and reorganization of other district and major offices with the aim to improve our services to the public and prevent over-familiarization of our personnel in their current assignments,” Vincent Philip Maronilla said in a Viber message to reporters.

Maronilla said they began restructuring several ports last month, including Metro Manila’s top two ports.

“Last July, a reorganization of our district offices in (the) Manila International Container Port, Port of Manila, Batangas, San Fernando La Union, Limay, and Legaspi was already conducted,” he said.

Maronilla did not give further details as to the officials and personnel involved in the reshuffle.

In a taped public address on Monday night, Duterte ordered Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero to reorganize various regional offices of the bureau in the next couple of days.

“I called Jagger, si Guerrero dito, Commissioner, sabi ko sa kanya (I told him), ‘I want to see a reshuffle of the different regional offices within the next two or three days,’” he said.

Duterte also urged Guerrero to address concerns on the continued smuggling of illegal drugs in the country. (PNA)
