IN CELEBRATION of the National Tourism Week, former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Romualdez Marcos Jr. on Monday expressed hopes that the country’s economy will be energized and recover with the government’s opening of domestic tourism.
The senator lamented the adverse effects of the pandemic on tourism industry as it has also displaced millions of workers.
“Ang unti-unting pagbubukas ng lokal na turismo ang magiging daan upang makabangon ang napakalawak na industriyang ito,” Marcos said in his VBlog.
He cited that in 2019, almost P3.7 trillion was generated by the domestic and international tours.
In domestic tourism alone, the government earned some P3.1 trillion while international tourism raked in P548 billion, Marcos bared.
The former senator noted that in July 2019, there were 4,852,107 tourist arrivals but it drastically dropped to 1,300,000 tourist arrivals in July this year due to the pandemic.
He welcomed the government’s decision to allow “staycations” in areas under general community quarantine (GCQ).
