Leaving a Legacy by C. de los Angeles
On the ongoing power struggle at the House of Representatives, where House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano refuses to abide with the gentleman’s agreement brokered by Pres. Duterte for a 15-21 term sharing agreement with Cong. Lord Allan Velasco.
Last Tuesday, Sept. 29, Pres. Duterte called again the two congressman in the hope that Speaker Cayetano be a man of his word or have the “Palabra de Honor” to fulfill his end of the agreement. However, despite again reiterating his commitment to honor the term sharing after the meeting, in the days that follows does the complete opposite.
On the same day before offering to resign from his post, Speaker Cayetano quoted Proverbs 3:3-4, which reads:
“With God, we shall do valiantly; it is He who will tread down our foes.”
Personally, I once admired former senator Cayetano. But as the years have gone by he is the epitome; the very definition of what is a hypocrite. He quotes the bible constantly but his actions shows constantly he has no values and morals.
His time as Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary, he could not even solve the simple problem of getting a passport. The current DFA Secretary, Teddy Boy Locsin, is doing an excellent job. The way he handles the department and the needs of our overseas filipinos as well as coordinating with foreign embassies is a far cry from the incompetent tenor of Former Senator and now Speaker Cayetano whose highlight for me, I will again repeat, was he could not solve the simple task of issuing new passports to our countrymen.
Since Speaker Cayetano likes to quote the bible let me share a verse from Ephesians 5:31:
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”
Husbands and wives are suppose to be one flesh. They are to be united under one roof. Yet for your own selfish motives and greed you declared you and your wife live in separate homes so you can run in different districts. For your defense you cited the example of husband and wife congressmen Albano and Albano. One who was a congressman of Isabela and the other of Davao. This is also wrong. And Speaker Cayetano’s argument of highlighting another wrong to justify his wrongdoing really shows the kind of person he is and the example of the wrong people and values we have in government.
Unless Speaker Cayetano and his wife Cong. Cayetano are annulled then they must be living under the same roof and therefore have the same residential address. A Chinese businessman once told me, “You know why I like doing business in the Philippines? Because here anything is possible as long you have the money.”
We as Filipinos need to have more pride in ourselves and not allow ourselves to be prostitutes who do anything for money. We need to reinstall values and have pride in ourselves and our country. And please let’s not idolize and vote in to power people like Cayetano who is drunk with power and greed.
