Fragment of historic Berlin Wall unveiled in Manila

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, German Ambassador to the Philippines Anke Reiffenstuel, Manila Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna, and National Museum director Jeremy Barns unveil on Monday, Oct. 5, 2020, a fragment replica of the historic Berlin Wall at the Bonifacio Shrine near the City Hall. The wall served as a border that divided East and West Germany. It was erected by the East German government in 1961 to halt the exodus of people, particularly skilled workers, from communist East Berlin. The West condemned the Berlin Wall and exploited it as anti-communist propaganda. The wall crumbled on November 9, 1989 during a mass protest. Kiara Lauren Ibanez / BENJAMIN CUARESMA
