MANILA – San Miguel came alive late into overtime to beat Blackwater, 90-88, in their historic Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) game at the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center on Tuesday.
The Beermen-Elite clash marked the first time in the PBA’s 45-year history that a game has to be played in the morning.
However, both teams were still playing at lunchtime as Blackwater, which squandered a first quarter brilliance, came back in the fourth quarter to force an overtime.
The team even got to score the first four points of the extra period.
However, SMB pounced on late errors by Blackwater to score the next six points of overtime and eventually took the win.
The Elite have three chances to win it outright, but Mike Tolomia and Ron Dennison missed crucial layups and Don Trollano’s jumper just rattled out of the rim.
Tolomia had one final crack at the basket with a desperation heave from half-court, but the shot only hit the rim as time expired.
Mo Tautuaa led the Beermen, who have now won four straight games to move up to 5-2, with 26 points, 14 rebounds, two assists, and two steals aside from his game-saving block.
Marcio Lassiter added 12 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Daquioag finished with 20 markers, five boards, three dimes, and one steal for Blackwater, but he too had six turnovers.
