TRUE FRIENDSHIP TRANSCENDS IDEOLOGIES and Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson seems to believe in this dictum as he agreed to stand as “ninong” or sponsor to the upcoming wedding of popular actress and philanthropist Angel Locsin.
This was disclosed late Tuesday by Lacson himself who represents the “right” of the political spectrum vis-a-vis Locsin who is identified with the “left” as her sister was tagged by the military as a New People’s Army (NPA) “amazon” and her nephew former Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Neri Colmenares of the Makabayan bloc in Congress suspected as fronting for the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).
Southern Luzon Command chief Lt. Gen. Antonio Parlade Jr. clarified that he never mentioned that Locsin is a member of the NPA, armed wing of the CPP that has been waging a Maoist-inspired armed struggle against the government for more than 51 years.
“I mentioned Ella Colmenares because it’s really true that Ella is an NPA. I never said that Angel Locsin is an NPA,” Parlade told senators during the hearing.
Parlade, however, maintained that the actress is fully aware of the fact her sister Ella Colmenares is a member of the NPA.
Colmenares had denied Parlade’s claims and said she is merely supportive of women’s rights and not the armed struggle.
Lacson can only heave a sigh of relief.
“I’m glad you mentioned in your own words that Angel Locsin is not an NPA. I’ll make a disclosure. Her fiancé, Neil Arce is a family friend. As a matter of fact, pag kinasal yun kukunin akong ninong [if they got married, they’re getting me to be principal sponsor]. I’m just making a disclosure. I’m glad that you mentioned that she is not an NPA,” Lacson told Parlade during the the Senate defense committee hearing on the alleged red-tagging of celebrities and organization by military officials.
The senator added: “And I hope she’s monitoring para malaman niya na sayo [Parlade] mismo nanggaling na hindi siya NPA. And I think she will feel relieved coming from you na hindi siya NPA.”
