MANILA – The Best Player of the Conference honor and other coveted awards in the 2020 PBA Season will all be given out at the close of the Philippine Cup bubble now being held at the AUF Sports Arena and Cultural Center in Angeles City, Pampanga.
This was learned from PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial who explained that they will be formalizing the matter before the league board to retain of giving out individual season awards despite having only played for one conference because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Marcial said he will discuss the matter during the regular board meeting of the PBA which is held last week of each month.
Traditionally, the Annual Leo Awards are held during the opening night of each season, and in this case during the 46th season of the PBA next year.
Other than the MVP award, to be bestowed too at season’s end are the Rookie of the Year, Mythical Five, Mythical Second Team, Samboy Lim Sportsmanship Award, Most Improved Player, and the All-Defensive Team.
One sure thing is that a new MVP will be named that could end the six-year reign of June Mar Fajardo as league’s perennial top player.
The San Miguel Beer center failed to play in the bubble as he is recovering from an off-season surgery due to a shin injury. Fajardo won his first MVP award in 2014.
Based on the latest statistical points standings released by the league at the end of the eliminations, on top of the list is Phoenix’s Matthew Wright.
It will also be the first time the PBA won’t be giving out a Best Player of the Conference award which was first bestowed in 1994. (AI/MTVN)
