MANILA – Opposition Team S.P.O.R.T.S. in the coming Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) elections has challenged the ruling party of incumbent POC president Bambol Tolentino to an online public debate via the regular Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) forum.
The challenge of the opposition party was formally made by Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) president Dr. Philip Ella Juico, who is running as first vice president representing Team S.P.O.R.T.S, through a letter to Tolentino’s group sent November 19.
“Team S.P.O.R.T.S would like to urge Mr. Tolentino and his team to engage our team headed by Atty. Jesus Clint O. Aranas in a ZOOM discussion/debate to be hosted and moderated by the members of the Philippine Sportswriters’ Association (“PSA”) at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, 24 November 2020,” Juico stated on his letter.
“We believe that a public and open dialogue about issues can be discussed and answered in the spirit of democratic inquiry and sober discussion under the auspices of media. This should help take care of your accusation that Clint Aranas and his “cohorts” are engaged in character assassination,” Juico said.
“We, in Team S.P.O.R.T.S, follow both the code of sportsmanship and the Rule of Law. These sacred principles have been ignored once too often. We realize that at the end of the day, by running for a particular position, we are in effect applying for a privilege to serve as volunteers,” explains Juico.
“The people who will be rendering judgment will be like your ordinary employer. They will look at, basically, two things: competence (management record and performance) and character (honesty, trustworthiness and truth telling). They may also consider likeability, empathy and compassion. Actions indicative of character and competence will be discussed,” as written in the letter.
“Through this letter, Team S.P.O.R.T.S offers to help reduce whatever animosity may arise from this election even as we realize that truth and credibility are at stake. We therefore ask that you advise us on the invitation we have extended soonest so that arrangements may be made with PSA,” concludes Juico.
Juico’s team SPORTS stands for (S)ervice to our stakeholders, (P)roactive professional performance, (O)ne in our passion, mission; (R)esponsible and accountable, (T)ransparent and honesty, (S)trong and self-sufficient. (AI/MTVN)
