Embattled SC Associate Justice Marvic Leonen

MANILA — Acknowledging the brilliance in law practice of Supreme Court Associate Justice Marvic Leonen but allegedly slow on dispensing justice, the Filipino League of Advocates of Good Governance-Maharlika (FLAG-Maharlika) on Sunday expressed dismay on his “intellectual arrogance” by sitting on several cases including the billions of pesos of rebates for Meralco consumers.
In an interview with National Press Club of the Philippines president Paul Gutierrez over at the Meet the Press sa Radio Pilipinas program, FLAG-Maharlika secretary-general Ed Cordevilla stressed that their move to file an impeachment case against Leonen was prompted by their concern to restore the people’s trust in the judiciary.
“Palagay namin para maibalik yung respeto at pananampalataya ng ating mga kababayan sa hudikatura e, dapat gawan ng aksyon, (maghain) ng impeachment (laban) nitong si Justice Leonen,” Cordevilla said.
He added that his group had been monitoring Leonen’s inaction on many cases which he should have decided swiftly as “justice delayed is justice denied.”
“Instead of acting swiftly on these cases, what Justice Leonen did was an obstruction of justice,” Cordevilla lamented.
He also bared that more than 500 citizens have already voluntarily signed up an online petition expressing support for the impeachment complaint filed against Leonen before the House of Representatives last Monday, 07 December 2020.
Controversial lawyer Larry Gadon accompanied Cordevilla in filing the case.
The 500 netizens affixed their signatures on change.org to “Impeach Justice Marvic for failure to file 15 years of Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) and having most backlog cases.”
Cordevilla vehemently denied insinuations that their move was linked to the electoral protest of former Senator Bongbong Marcos in the 2016 vice presidential race.
“Hindi po kami supporter ni Senator Bongbong. Kung saka-sakali, susuportahan namin si (Senator) Imee (Marcos) for vice (president),” Cordevilla clarified.
He pointed that the former senator was not even mentioned in their impeachment complaint before the House of Representatives.
Cordevilla also dumped allegations that FLAG-Maharlika was only created recently to file an impeachment case against Leonen.
He revealed that FLAG-Maharlika has been in existence as a humanitarian group eight long years ago or since 2012.
Amid the pandemic, Cordevilla said his group had been conducting various socio-civic activities like rapid testing of Covid-19 and giving “ayuda” in far-flung communities during calamities like Isabela which was badly hit recently by typhoon Ulysses. (AI/MTVN)
