DAVAO CITY – Davao Region’s local leaders have lauded the surrender of the 26 New People’s Army’s (NPA) rebels under the Guerilla Front 33 (GF 33), which leads to the group’s total dismantling.
In a statement Monday, the Army’s 10th Infantry Division (10ID) said the surrenderers will receive cash, as well as livelihood and food assistance from Davao De Oro Gov. Jayvee Tyron Uy, Davao Del Norte Gov. Edwin Jubahib, and Davao Oriental Gov. Nelson Dayanghirang, who is also the Regional Peace and Order Council chairperson.
Davao del Norte 1st District Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez also vowed to help the surrenderers start a new life through scholarships, free hospitalization, and medical assistance, the 10ID said.
The 10ID said the governors, along with New Corella Mayor Jorjan Federico, distributed livelihood assistance, food packs, hygiene kits, and PHP10,000 to each of the surrenderers when they yielded to authorities late last week.
“This is the manifestation that the whole of the nation approach is working. We want to prove to you that we are sincere despite the propaganda against the government. Give us a chance,” Gov. Uy said.
Meanwhile, Jubahib commended the surrenderers for rejecting the communist rebel movement and for “choosing peace”.
The Davao del Norte provincial government, he said, will fast-track the implementation of various projects in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA), where rebels usually focus their recruitment.
Lt. Gen Jose Faustino, Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) commander, said the surrender of the top leadership of GF 33 would have an impact on the other rebel units in the region.
“Today, we have the local peace engagements, from our local chief executives down to the barangay level. Instead of talking to the national level, we are now talking to the level of the fronts. Look at how effective it is. We all know there’s no progress with the talks on the national level with the recent peace talks.” Faustino noted.
Among the surrenderers are its commanding officer and front secretary, according to the 10ID. (PNA)
