E. Visayas logs highest Covid-19 daily tally with 244 cases

TACLOBAN CITY – Eastern Visayas has 244 new coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases, the highest daily tally since March, bringing the region’s cumulative total to 10,456 as of Wednesday.

In its latest case bulletin, the Department of Health (DOH) reported 56 new cases in Samar, 53 in Eastern Samar, 44 in Leyte, 20 in Biliran, 17 in Northern Samar, and 16 in Southern Leyte.

The cities of Tacloban and Ormoc have 35 and three new infections, respectively.

They are part of the 1,472 laboratory results from the Eastern Visayas Regional Covid-19 Testing Center and Divine Word Virology Laboratory both in this city, and Ormoc City Molecular Diagnostic Center.

To date, the region has 875 active coronavirus cases, as 90.50 percent or 9,463 patients have recovered from the disease, while 118 died of complications.

DOH Eastern Visayas head Exuperia Sabalberino said the number of new cases may increase or even double in the coming days due to social gatherings and overcrowding in malls, shopping centers, churches, and other public places this holiday season.

“This has been our observation though we have been reminding the public to strictly observe the minimum health standards even before the holiday rush. There are many asymptomatic carriers and staying at home is still the best defense,” she said in a virtual presser.

Based on the data of the regional epidemiology and surveillance unit, 98.8 percent of the patients here were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms, and the rest were severe or critical cases.

The DOH disclosed that the region is tagged as a moderate to high-risk area for Covid-19 by the World Health Organization with more new cases expected during and after the holiday season.

Exuperia said this must be prevented as this would overwhelm the healthcare system here, especially that the capacity of health facilities is usually weaker in January.

“It is during this time that we have many admissions for other diseases like hypertension and diabetes, among others, and some of our health care workers will end their contract by the end of December. So, please always properly wear your face mask and shield and avoid closed settings, crowded places, close and long conversations with other people,” she added.

Meanwhile, among the region’s 147 towns and cities, Tagapul-an, Samar has remained coronavirus-free, with no case recorded since the start of the global health crisis, the DOH said. (PNA)
