MANILA — Amidst the possible spike in the number of Covid-19 cases in Metro Manila due to probable violations in quarantine protocols owing to the holidays, the Department of Health (DoH) has warned the public at least eight (8) hospitals in the metropolis are now at a critical level with the increase in number of daily infections.

The health department disclosed that eight (8) out of 144 hospitals in Metro Manila had been placed under critical level in terms of bed capacity solely for Covid-19 patients, based on data from the DoH as of December 23.

The latest figures from the agency showed that two more hospitals were added under the ‘critical level’ from six hospitals last December 18. However, the previous data comprised of only 139 hospitals.

The DoH classifies occupancy levels for Covid-19 beds in health centers as either critical, high risk, moderate, or safe. Under the critical level, hospitals have already reached more than 85 percent of its bed occupancy for Covid-19 patients.

Hospitals are classified as high risk if 70 percent but not more than 85 percent of its COVID-19 beds are occupied. In addition, hospitals with a Covid-19 bed capacity of from 60 to 70 percent rate are classified as moderate. And hospitals fall under the ‘safe’ level if bed utilization rate is less than 60 percent.

The bed occupancy rate for the whole of Metro Manila remains at the ‘safe’ zone with 35.9 percent, or 2,527 out of the 7,047 total beds occupied.

Only hospitals in Metro Manila, however, that have data on Covid-19 beds allocated for the treatment of coronavirus patients were included in this list:
