‘Fan Girl’ wins Best Picture, sweeps major awards in MMFF 2020 Gabi ng Parangal

MANILA—The film “Fan Girl” wins big in the just concluded 46th Metro Manila Film Festival(MMFF) this Sunday, December 27, held via live streaming of MMFF Facebook page.

“Fan Girl” swept five major categories as Best Picture, Best Director (Antoinette Jadaone), Best Actress (Charlie Dizon), Best Actor (Paulo Avelino) and Best Screenplay (Antoinette Jadaone).

Direk Antoinette was still composed when she won the Best Screeplay award, but she laughed like she would fall from her seat when she won again as the Best Director.

When the Best Picture was announced, Direk Dan Villegas(Direk Antoinette’s fiancé) jumped for joy as he was one of the producers of the film. They jumped even more with the proclamation of the Best Actress which went to Charlie Dizon.

Charlie first gave her thanks to God, special mention to Iza Calzado(nominated Best Actress for Tagpuan), who Charlie stressed, was her bridge to be introduced to Direk Antoinette.

Charlie and Iza worked together in Cinemalaya 2019 film Pandanggo sa Hukay.

Meanwhile, Paulo was also composed in his acceptance speech as Best Actor, but there was somewhat an emotional touch in his punchline: “It’s for you, Aki.”

Aki is his son with LJ Reyes.

Apart from five major awards, Fan Girl also grabbed four more awards for Best Cinematography (Neil Daza), Best Editing (Benjamin Tolentino), Best Sound (Vincent Villa), and third place for the Best Virtual Float.

The 2nd Best Picture “The Boy Foretold By The Stars” also won the Gender Sensitivity Award and Best Original Theme Song (“Ulan”).

The 3rd Best Picture Tagpuan won for the Best Supporting Actress (Shaina Magdayao).

“Magikland” screenplay was not nominated and was not included in the Top 3 Best Picture.

Nevertheless, “Magikland” copped six awards—FPJ Memorial Award, Best Virtual Float, Best Production Design (Ericson Navarro), Best Visual effects (Richard Francia, Ryan Grimarez of Central Digital Lab), Best Musical Score (Emerzon Texon), and Special Jury Prize (Peque Gallaga).

Marco Gumabao and Kylie Versoza hosted the virtual MMFF 2020 Gabi ng Parangal program which lasted fr one hour and five minutes only.
