No letup in crackdown vs. Metro cops involved in illegal drugs

MANILA – National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Brig. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. on Monday said there would be no letup in the crackdown against erring cops especially those involved in illegal drugs.

“I give my stern warning to everyone in NCRPO. Never ever engage yourself in illegal activities especially in illegal drugs or otherwise face the consequences,” Danao said during Monday’s flag-raising ceremony at the Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City.

Over the weekend, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported that two rookie police officers are facing dismissal after they tested positive for illegal drugs during a random drug test.

The two non-commissioned officers have been disarmed and placed under restrictive custody by their respective units while investigation is underway.

He reminded police personnel to keep themselves away from illegal drugs.

“Huwag natin tularan ang mga bulok na kamatis na sumisira at humihila pababa sa ating organisasyon (Let’s not become like the rotten tomatoes that tarnish the image of our organization). I will be very, very strict when it comes to implementing rules and guidelines about that,” he said.

A total of 16,839 police officers have been penalized since 2016 under the PNP’s internal cleansing program to rid its ranks of scalawags.

Data showed that 4,784 police personnel have been dismissed from the service, 8,349 have been suspended, and 1,803 have been reprimanded.

Other punishments included demotion, forfeiture of salary, restriction, and withholding of privileges.

Some 564 PNP personnel have also been removed for involvement in illegal drugs. (PNA)
