Oldest PH bishop dies at 91

MANILA – Retired Legazpi Bishop Jose Sorra, who established the youth apostolate in the country, has died on Thursday. He was 91.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) news website reported that the oldest Catholic prelate in the country died past Wednesday midnight.

Legazpi Bishop Joel Baylon said Sorra died “due to respiratory failure secondary to pulmonary embolism.”

“We ask for your prayers for his eternal rest,” he said.

Sorra was ordained a priest for the diocese in 1956.

In 1974, he was appointed bishop of Virac. At this time, he established the youth apostolate. In 1993, he was named the fourth bishop of Legazpi diocese, where he served until his retirement in 2005.

In 1986, he served as the first chairman of the CBCP-Episcopal Commission on Youth after it was created. (PNA)
