2 NPA rebels yield in GenSan

GENERAL SANTOS CITY – Two more members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) unit operating in this city’s hinterlands and nearby Sarangani province surrendered to government troops on Wednesday following a series of negotiations.

Lt. Col. Edgardo Vilchez Jr., commanding officer of Army’s 38th Infantry Battalion, said Thursday the rebels yielded with their firearms at their headquarters in Barangay Bawing here.

Vilchez said the returnees, who are residents of Maasim town in Sarangani, are former members of the NPA’s Guerrilla Front 73-Far South Mindanao Region.

One of them was an active regular cadre while the other was part of the NPA unit’s “Milisyang Bayan,” he said.

“They decided to give up due to their difficult situation in the mountains,” he said in a report.

Citing accounts from the surrenderers, Vilchez said the former rebels experienced sleepless nights, hunger, and fatigue from days of walking to escape from the continuous focused military operations in the area.

Vilchez said the former rebels also decided to surrender after seeing the “government’s sincerity in helping them return to normal lives and in developing their communities.”

The former rebels, he said, were also encouraged by their comrades who have earlier surrendered and availed of the livelihood grants and other support packages under the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program. (PNA)
