PRRD won’t allow ABS-CBN to operate even if it gets new franchise unless…

MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said he will not allow the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to grant ABS-CBN permit to operate even if the broadcast giant gets a fresh franchise from Congress.

“Congress is planning to restore the franchise of the Lopezes. Wala akong problema doon kung i-restore ninyo (I don’t have a problem if Congress restores it), But if you say that if they can operate, kung may ano na sila (if they already have a franchise) no. I will not allow them. I will not allow the NTC to grant them the permit to operate,” Duterte said in his televised talk to the people.

Duterte said ABS-CBN must and should settle first their unpaid taxes.

“Unless and until mabayaran ang taxes (are paid), I will ignore your franchise. I will not give them the license to operate. Kalokohan ‘yan. Parang binigyan mo sila ng (That’s nonsense. It’s like giving them a) prize for committing criminal acts,” he said.

On Jan. 5, Deputy Speaker Vilma Santos-Recto filed House Bill No. 8298 seeking to renew for another 25 years ABS-CBN’s legislative franchise.

Price cap on pork, chicken products causing pandemonium

MANILA — With a price ceiling now in place, market vendors are now up in arms as they criticized the government over its ‘insensitive’ response to runaway prices of meat products, particularly pork and poultry, which have seen soaring in recent weeks following the resurgence of the African swine fever outbreak as well as avian flu in most farms across the archipelago.

Local consumers are now in a quandary with the stoppage of sellers selling their meat products in several private and public markets.

“Maling-mali ang ginagawa ng gobyerno sa pagtakda ng price ceiling dahil ang nagyayari ngayon ay hindi na magtitinda ang mga nasa palengke dahil sa presyong itinakda nila ay malulugi ang mga nagtitinda,” one consumer decried the price control directive from Malacañang.

Corollary to this, a market vendor pointed out that they should not be carrying the burden of the problem because the soaring prices are being caused by hoarding and the usurious prices set by middlemen.

“Bakit kami ang pagtutuunan nila ng pansin samantalang ang mga middleman ang siyang dahilan kung bakit mataas ang presyo ng baboy,” he chided the agriculture department.

DA to provide loan to market vendors affected by price cap

MANILA – The Department of Agriculture (DA) has given its word to market vendors in Metro Manila that they will provide financial assistance in the course of the 60-day implementation of the new Executive Order (EO) mandating a price ceiling on meat and chicken products.

“Magpapautang tayo sa mga market vendors, alam naman nating sila ay at the mercy of wholesalers (We will lend money to the market vendors, they are at the mercy of wholesalers),” Agriculture Secretary William Dar said during the Laging Handa briefer on Monday with Communications chief Martin Andanar.

Dar is yet to share the details on the loanable amount offered to vendors but he mentioned it will be paid with zero-interest in five years.

“We are offering it to association members,” he added.

EO 124 orders a price ceiling of PHP270 per kilo for “kasim” (pork shoulder) and “pigue” (leg), PHP300 per kilo for “liempo” (belly), and PHP160 per kilogram for dressed chicken effective today (February 8).
