As ‘Auring’ nears 40 families evacuated in Lapu-Lapu City

LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Heeding the age-old adage that prevention is better than cure, Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan on Monday ordered the preventive evacuation to 40 families in Barangays Pajo and Buaya in the main island of Mactan and Barangay Baring in Olango island this city.

Annabeth Cuizon, City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) chief, said that 28 families in Barangay Baring, Olango Island were evacuated to the Baring Elementary School.

She also bared that Barangay Buaya has evacuated six families and six families were also evacuated in Barangay Pajo.

It was learned that the evacuees were kept safe in their barangay gymnasiums.

Cuizon said that they already distributed food packs and meals to the evacuees in Barangays Pajo and Buaya.

However, the evacuees in Barangay Baring were only given food packs due to the difficulty of going to Olango island because of the big waves.

She also said that they only coordinated with Baring barangay officials in distributing the food packs from some stores in Olango Island.

Cuizon said the city government will be paying for those goods.

Each evacuee has received five kilos of rice, 15 pieces of canned goods, 5 pieces of instant noodles, and 5 pieces of powdered milk.

Cuizon further disclosed that they still have 3,000 relief goods on standby at the Hoops Dome.

According to weather bureau Pagasa, although typhoon Auring has slowed down but it may pass Cebu’s northern tip on Monday morning. (AI/MTVN)
