Former Ombudswoman and Supreme Court Justice Conchita Morales

MANILA — Apparently guided by the saying that those who refused to learn from history are doomed to repeat it, the opposition forces — from the extreme left Makabayan bloc to the far-right Magdalo — have resolved not to experience again the 2016 and 2019 electoral debacles by fielding a single national slate for the 2022 polls.
Reliable sources bared that the opposition forces under the coalition 1Sambayan led by retired Chief Justice Antonio Carpio and former Ombudsman Conchita Morales will converge on Thursday morning, March 18, at the Makati Sports Club to come up with a single national slate from the president, vice president to 12 senators.
“We have a lot of good people but they are not in leadership positions. Their talent, their patriotism – they’re all wasted because they are not in leadership positions. What we have to do is to put the right people there,” Carpio said.
Other prominent personalities in 1Sambayan included former Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario, former Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro, and activist priest Fr. Albert “Paring Bert” Alejo.
The convenors of 1Sambayan noted that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte won the presidency in 2016 by a mere plurality, not a majority, of votes.
“The democratic forces must then rally in order to block a victory by Duterte’s heir, whomever it or she will be. A brand new, competent leadership with integrity must take over when Duterte steps down next year,” one of the convenors of 1Sambayan said.
This developed as opposition leader Vice President Leni Robredo reportedly preferred to run for governor of Camarines Sur while internal squabbles rock ruling PDP-Laban.
PDP-Laban looks headed into splitting into two factions: one those loyal to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and inclined to support either Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio or Senator Bong Go as presidential candidate while the other one is those pushing for Senator Manny Pacquiao as their standard-bearer.
On the other hand, erstwhile PDP-Laban secretary-general Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez and ousted House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano were also reportedly making rounds across the country with their moist eye on the presidency 14 months from now. (AI/MTVN)
