MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported the death of another police officer due to Covid-19 on Saturday, 20 March 2021, bringing the total number of fatalities in the police force to 35.

PNP Officer in Charge Police Lieutenant General Guillermo Lorenzo T Eleazar expressed his condolences to the family of a male police officer, a Police Colonel, assigned in Metro Manila who succumbed last March 18 at V. Luna Medical Center, Quezon City.

“We would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the bereaved family and assure them that all benefits and assistance will be given,” Eleazar said.

Initial investigation reveals that two weeks prior to his admission the patient manifested fever and heavy coughs that he self-medicated with paracetamol. However, on March 18, 2021, at 8 a.m. he experienced difficulty of breathing which prompted his admission to VLMC.

Around 11:30 a.m. of the same date, he manifested without cardiac tone and blood pressure, and CPR was performed on him to no avail. He was pronounced dead by the attending physician at 11:59 a.m. on March 18, 2021.

The police officer was subjected to a swab test upon admission on March 18, 2021, which resulted positive for Covid-19.

” I would like to reiterate to all our police officers that if you have a fever, cough or flu immediately submit yourself to the nearest hospital and have your swab tests done, we are still battling the unseen enemy, always be cautious on your health status and do not do self-medication”, Eleazar added.

As of Friday, March 19, there are 1,239 active cases of Covid-19 among PNP personnel as 107 recoveries were recorded from the 12, 898 confirmed cases. (AI/MTVN)
