TACLOBAN CITY – The city government of Calbayog in Samar has declared March 24, 2021 (Wednesday) as a special non-working day in the entire city for the funeral of slain Mayor Ronaldo Aquino.
The Calbayog city council passed a resolution on March 19 declaring the special non-working day to observe the funeral of the local chief executive who led the city since 2011.
The local government released the copy through its official social media account on Tuesday.
“The entire city of Calbayog is in mourning for the loss of such a great leader during these trying times and enjoins all establishments, offices, and institutions to cease work in observance for the funeral services of the late city mayor and pay the last respect for him,” according to the resolution.
Hundreds of local government officials and supporters are expected to join the family in a funeral procession of the mayor killed in a shootout with policemen on March 8.
“The local government of Calbayog deems it proper to declare a special non-working day, in reverence of the sacrifice of the honorable city mayor, owing from him the current progress and development, stabilization of the city’s economy, upliftment of the people’s lives, thereby creating a good name for the city,” the resolution added.
The National Bureau of Investigation and the Philippine National Police (PNP) are still digging deeper into the March 8 shootout. At least seven policemen allegedly involved have been identified.
On March 8, the mayor and his aides were heading to their family-owned resort to attend his son’s birthday party after playing tennis when the firefight took place.
Killed were Aquino, two policemen from Samar PNP, a policeman assigned to secure the mayor, his driver, and a civilian. Two were wounded, including the mayor’s aide and a police officer.
Aquino, 59, was on his third and last term, served as mayor since 2011 after then-mayor Reynaldo Uy was killed in a fiesta celebration in Hinabangan, Samar. The incident remained unsolved. (PNA)
