MANILA – The National Police Commission (Napolcom) should “simplify” the process of claiming death benefits for the families of deceased cops, President Rodrigo Duterte said on Monday night.
Duterte ordered the Napolcom to ensure that the kin of deceased cops no longer have to go through the tedious process of traveling from their respective provinces to the Philippine National Police (PNP) headquarters in Camp Crame in Quezon City just to claim benefits.
“Ang practice kasi ang mga biyuda pupunta pa dito sa Crame. Ewan ko (The practice used to be the widow goes to Crame. I don’t know) if it’s still the practice now, but if it is still the practice, I’m ordering you to cut it now,” he said in a pre-recorded public address.
He described as a “disgrace to government” allowing deceased polices’ kin to spend their own money to get the death benefits when the agency could simply assign the task to their regional offices.
“Alam mo kayo na ‘yan (You know, you should take care of it), there should be an office that should take care of this,” he said.
Duterte said the agency had enough resources to provide these services in their regional offices.
“Sa regional nalang nila i-follow-up. Kayo ang magpadala (Ask the regional offices to follow it up. You send people there). The PNP has the resources, there are almost a lot of people there walking around,” he said.
He admitted that the Napolcom and PNP could easily revert to the old practice of requiring deceased cops’ kin to claim death benefits in Camp Crame, but the practice must be stopped while he remains as President.
“Simply mo na. Nakuha ninyo ako (Simplify it. Do you understand me?) You might revert it to the old practice maybe when I’m no longer the President. But ngayong Presidente ako sumunod kayo. Ito ang gusto ko. Kayo na ang mag process, kayo ang mag retrieve kasi kayo ang may alam (But now I’m President you must follow my orders. This is what I want. You process the papers, you retrieve them because you know how it’s done),” he said.
Duterte said the family of deceased cops should only be called to show up only when death benefits are ready. (PNA)
