BAGUIO CITY – The Diocese of Baguio has identified seven churches in the city and Benguet province where the Catholic faithful can go for a pilgrimage to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Christianity in the country.
Bishop Victor Bendico of Baguio said the seven churches would hold Masses to jumpstart the year-long celebration, from April 4, 2021 to April 22, 2022, as stated by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines.
From April 4 to 10, the faithful can attend scheduled Masses in the churches subject to health protocols.
The Our Lady of Atonement Cathedral in Baguio City will hold a Mass at 8:30 a.m. on April 4 to kick-off the celebration in Baguio.
It will be followed by the mass at the Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Tuding, Itogon, Benguet at 10 a.m. on April 5; Vincent Ferrer Parish in Baguio at 9 a.m on April 6; San Isidro Labrador Parish in Abatan, Buguias, Benguet at 10 a.m. on April 7; Immaculate Conception Parish in Acop, Caponga, Tublay Benguet at 10 a.m. on April 8; San Lorenzo Ruiz Parish on Loakan Road at 10 a.m. on April 9; and San Jose the Husband of Mary Parish at Poblacion La Trinidad at 8:30 a.m on April 10.
In going for a pilgrimage, Bendico said the person must undergo confession; attend the Mass; say a prayer for the intention of the Holy Father, for the fidelity of the Filipino people to their Christian calling; prayer for the increase of priestly and religious vocations; prayer for the defense of the family; and recite the Lord’s prayer.
“April 4 of this year is Easter Sunday, the day when the pilgrim Churches’ holy door nationwide will be opened by their respective local ordinaries,” Bendico said.
Easter Sunday was believed to be the time when the Eucharist was first celebrated in the land. (PNA)
