P20-M food storage facility breaks ground in CDO

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY–Department of Agriculture and local officials led the groundbreaking for the PHP20-million storage and packing facility in this city on Thursday.

DA Assistant Secretary for Agribusiness and Marketing Kristine Y. Evangelista said the dome-type storage and packing facility aims to improve food production in Northern Mindanao by helping extend the shelf life of highly perishable commodities.

Evangelista said the facility would also reduce post-harvest losses of farmers.

Mayor Oscar S. Moreno noted this city’s strategic location for the facility, given its proximity to the Macabalan seaport and the vegetable “bagsakan” center in Barangay Bulua.

The whole facility has an area of 1,300 square meters, provided by the local government as a counterpart. It has a maximum capacity of 300 metric tons of vegetables.

DA-Region 10 Executive Director Carlene C. Collado said the project is a joint initiative of the agency and the local government under the Agriculture Stimulus Package of the Bayanihan II.

Collado said the initiative aims to ensure “a resilient food system, especially during this pandemic.” (PNA)
