MANILA — The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology has on Saturday (27 March 2021) confirmed that former Calauan, Laguna mayor, and rape-slay convict Antonio Sanchez has died.

The cause of his death, however, has not yet been officially determined nor reported at press time Saturday.

The former local chief executive was serving jail time for the 1993 rape and murder of University of the Philippines-Los Baños students Eileen Sarmenta and Allan Gomez.

He was actually about to walk out a free man in 2019 through the Good Conduct Time Allowance law had not the family, human rights, and cause-oriented groups intervened.

As such, the GCTA law came under attack anchored on his impending freedom that sparked debates on the policy that eventually forced Department of Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra to order a review of the said law.

What followed was the crafting of new rules which prohibits convicts of heinous crimes from availing of the allowance.

Depending on the behavioral assessment of a detainee, the GCTA shortens jail time by at least five years.
