MANILA – Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso expressed his approval for an extension of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) if authorities see the need to do so.
“Kung kinakailangang i-extend based on data, dapat nating i-extend (If we need to extend based on data, then we should extend) because we value life,” Domagoso said in an interview over ANC on Wednesday.
While admitting that the livelihood of many would be affected, Domagoso said, “at the end of the day, the way I look at it, what matters most is life.”
Following the soaring number of coronavirus cases, President Rodrigo Duterte placed the National Capital Region (NCR) and the provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal under ECQ from March 29 until April 4.
Some groups have been calling for an extension of the ECQ in the hope to prevent a collapse of the healthcare system and to bring down the number of cases, most of which were recorded in the NCR.
Malacañang also said there is a “50-50” chance that the ECQ would be extended beyond April 4.
“Ngayon binabalanse pa natin, kailangan yung buhay at kabuhayan patuloy pa ring tumatakbo because kapag nawalan ng oportunidad ang taong kumita, magugutom (Now, we are still weighing it, life and livelihood should continue or else people will lose the opportunity to earn and they will get hungry),” Domagoso said.
The country recorded 10,016 new coronavirus infections on March 29, the highest single-day number of cases since the start of the pandemic.
As of March 30, Department of Health data show that there are 124,680 active cases. (PNA)
