NPA squad leader surrenders in Mountain Province, yields 3 assault rifles

MANILA — A squad leader of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) surrendered voluntarily to the Philippine National Police (PNP) and laid down his weapons In Tadian Mountain Province Tadian Mountain Province on Wednesday morning.

PNP Chief Police General Debold M Sinas identified the surrenderer as Mario Materyang Lapa-an, 36 years old, who used to serve as squad leader of Platoon Mountain Province of the New People’s Army.

“I commend the joint operating teams of Bontoc MPS, PIU MPPO, 1503rd RMFB 15 Tadian, MPPMFC, Tadian MPS, RIU 14 for the relentless intelligence-driven operations and series of negotiations that led to the surrender of Lapa-an on April 7, 2021, at 6:00 in the morning,” Sinas said.

“Lapa-an was convinced by the operating teams to surrender after several years of operating underground in the areas of Mountain Province and adjacent municipalities” Sinas added.

The surrenderer is under the custody of the 1503rd Regional Mobile Force Battalion 15 Tadian for some tactical information sharing. Three surrendered M16 rifles with serial number RP165305(Elisco), RP 9017049 (Colt) and 1 defaced serial number will be processed for proper documentation. (AI/MTVN)
