P13-M smuggled cigarettes seized in Zamboanga

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Authorities seized more than PHP13 million worth of assorted smuggled cigarettes in two separate law enforcement operations in the region, a top police official said Tuesday.

Brig. Gen. Ronaldo Genaro Ylagan, Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) director, said the first operation around 2:30 a.m. Monday in Barangay San Roque here resulted in the confiscation of 372 master cases of smuggled cigarettes worth PHP13 million.

Ylagan said the smuggled items were seized by police and Bureau of Customs (BOC) operatives from a warehouse in Zone 3, Barangay San Roque here.

Further investigation showed that the assorted cigarettes are owned by Sherwina Joe-Alihuddin of Barangay San Roque, who was not around when authorities swooped down on the area, Ylagan added.

Meanwhile, policemen from Zamboanga Sibugay and Maritime Group seized some PHP70,000 worth of smuggled cigarettes around 1 a.m. Tuesday in Purok Orchids, Barangay Gango, R.T. Lim town.

Ylagan said police operatives rushed to Purok Orchid, Barangay Gango following reports that smuggled cigarettes are being unloaded in the area.

He said an investigation is still being conducted to identify the owner of the contraband as the smuggled cigarettes were abandoned upon sensing the arrival of the policemen. (PNA)
