DA cites vital contribution of farmers, fisherfolk amid Covid

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – The Department of Agriculture (DA) 3 (Central Luzon) cited on Tuesday the local farmers and fisherfolk for their relentless efforts and contributions to the agriculture sector amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) outbreak.

At the kickoff celebration of the Farmers and Fisherfolk Month, DA-3 executive director Crispulo Bautista Jr. said these unsung heroes are behind the country’s food security during the pandemic.

“Sila ang mga bayani sa likod ng kasaganahan, seguridad sa pagkain at tunay na maaasahan anuman ang hamon ng panahon (They are the heroes behind the abundance and food security. They could be relied upon during challenging times),” Bautista said in his message during a livestream event.

He underscored the need to provide support to farmers affected by African swine fever (ASF).

“Ang ating crop sector ay nagbigay ng magandang performance pero ito ay nabawi ng livestock sector. So, I would like to encourage na suportahan ang programa ng ating Kalihim na si William Dar at mas pag-igihin pa natin ang pagbibigay tulong at ayuda sa mga magsasaka, lalo na sa livestock sector na siyang napinsala ng ASF (Our crop sector gave a good performance but it was offset by the livestock sector. So I would like to encourage support for the program of Agriculture Secretary William Dar and let us intensify the giving of support and assistance to the farmers, especially those in the livestock sector that has been hit by ASF),” Bautista said.

Eduardo Lapuz, DA-3 director for operations and extension, also cited the huge contribution of every farmer and fisherfolk to the country’s food security.

“During (the) pandemic, ang agriculture sector lamang ang mayroong positive growth at naging strong pa dahil sa resiliency of our farmers and fisherfolk. Let us continue to provide sustainable assistance para makatulong pa tayo lalo na sa food security ng ating bansa (During the pandemic, only the agriculture sector had positive growth and became even stronger due to the resiliency of our farmers and fisherfolk. Let us continue to provide sustainable assistance so that we can help more, especially with the food security of our country),” Lapuz said.

The DA-3 has lined up various programs and activities for the month-long celebration with a theme “May pandemya man or wala, mga magsasaka’t mangingisda maasahan ng bansa.” (PNA)
