TACLOBAN CITY – The town hall of San Isidro, Leyte was closed for two days after the mayor turned positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
Mayor Remedio Veloso announced in a social media post late Tuesday that he was infected through a test done on May 14.
“I assure you that I am doing well now. By God’s grace, I do not have any severe Covid-19 symptoms such as difficulty of breathing and fever,” he said.
The result prompted the local government to close the entire local government building on May 17 and 18 for thorough disinfection.
“As a protocol, my family and I will undergo a strict quarantine. The contact tracing team has already been deployed. Despite my absence, our basic services for the people will continue,” Veloso said.
The town just recorded 17 confirmed Covid-19 cases since last year with only two active cases, including the mayor.
Veloso is the eighth local chief executive from the region who caught the coronavirus. The others are Dexter Uy (Catbalogan City, Samar), Manuel Aoyang (Palapag, Northern Samar), Alfred Romualdez (Tacloban City), Gilbert Go (Giporlos, Eastern Samar), Amado Candido (Hernani, Eastern Samar), Pelagio Tecson, Jr (Tanauan, Leyte), and Governor Rogelio Espina (Biliran).
All officials recovered from Covid-19 except for Aoyang who died of the disease late last year. (PNA)
