Isolation facilities nearing capacity: NoCot health chief

KIDAPAWAN CITY, North Cotabato – Health authorities in the province said Thursday that local isolation facilities for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) are almost full.

Dr. Eva Rabaya, North Cotabato health chief, said health front-liners feared that Covid-19 patients may outnumber the isolation rooms in the provinces’ hospitals and local quarantine facilities.

“The cases of infections are rising and we fear we might be overwhelmed by this,” Rabaya told reporters here in the vernacular. “Our facilities are not yet full but if the trend continues, we might run out of isolation rooms.”

Rabaya cited the case of the M’lang District Hospital where at one given time the Covid-19 patients rose to 20, just three patients short to its full capacity of 23, while some are on the waiting list for admission.

“Even the other isolation facilities in various localities are also nearing full capacity,” she said.

“We appeal to our local health front-liners to conduct an assessment. Although positive per RT-PCR if the patients are asymptomatic and show mild signs, they may be advised to take home isolation,” she added.

She said severe cases from North Cotabato are sent to Cotabato Regional and Medical Center in Cotabato City and Southern Philippines Medical Center in Davao City.

However, she warned that these referral hospitals are also nearing capacity.

“These big hospitals also attend to many other patients,” she said, adding that local public schools are being eyed as temporary Covid-19 treatment centers. (PNA)
