LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Although the name of the tandem may be offensive to some sensitive ears but many Cebuanos here are excited over the “Pa-Ca” team-up of Senator Manny Pacquiao and ousted House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano, both apparently have a common political nemesis and that is no other than presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.
Reliable sources said although Cayetano on Friday, June 4, said he is “seriously considering” running for president in the 2022 elections but he keeps his door open to slide down as vice-presidential teammate of Pacquiao.
“Anyone and everyone who is qualified and could be a good president should now contribute in putting together a five-year plan para kahit sinong manalo, at least may plano na ‘yung ating bansa,” Cayetano said.
A professional boxer that he is, Pacquiao does not telegraph his punches and still evaded his presidential dream even if the members of the Manny Pacquiao for President Movement (MPPM) are distributing relief goods in the depressed areas all over the country.
But Pacquiao was obviously irked when a faction of the PDP-Laban led by Energy Secretary Alfonso pushed through with the national council meeting in Cebu City on May 31 without the approval of the Senator from General Santos City who is the acting president of the ruling party.
The Cusi faction, however, managed to ram through the approval of a resolution urging President Duterte to run for vice president but stopped short in endorsing Inday Sara as standard-bearer for the 2022 presidential elections.
Pacquiao directly called Cusi “incompetent” and too preoccupied with politics.
“Napakarami po nating problema na dapat nating harapin at hanapan ng solusyon. Pero nakakalungkot isipin na ‘yung ibang mga opisyales natin na dapat ay mangasiwa ng sitwasyon ng mga problema natin na kinakaharap natin ngayon panahon na ito, Mr. President, eh wala po tayong, ang inuuna po ay pamumulitika, Mr. President. I’m talking directly to Secretary Cusi, Mr. President,” said Pacquiao on Wednesday, June 2, in his privilege speech at the Senate.
On the other hand, Cayetano was ousted as Speaker of the House of Representatives in October 2020 allegedly thru the machinations of the feisty Davao City mayor and was replaced by Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco, a known protege of Inday Sara.
It can be recalled that Inday Sara also “engineered” the ouster of Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez as House Speaker in 2018.
Alvarez, a known ally and long-time friend of President Duterte, was kicked out as Speaker minutes before the Chief Executive delivered his third State of the Nation Address (Sona) in July 2018. He was immediately replaced by former President and now outgoing Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Sources said Inday Sara may eventually team up with former Defense Secretary Gibo Teodoro. (AI/MTVN)
