GENERAL SANTOS CITY – Some 105 police personnel in Region 12 (Soccsksargen) are currently under isolation and treatment after contracting coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
Brig. Gen. Bernard Tambaoan, Police Regional Office (PRO)-12 deputy director for administration, said the figure comprises the active cases from police offices, stations, and support units in the region as of Tuesday.
Tambaoan said 98 of them are staying in isolation centers, including the Regional Health Service-12 here, while seven are admitted in various Covid-19 referral hospitals.
“They are mostly asymptomatic and expected to recover fully,” he told reporters.
Since March last year, Tambaoan said they already recorded a total of 316 confirmed infections among their ranks, with 210 recoveries.
He said they are continually monitoring the compliance of police offices and personnel in the region to curb the spike in Covid-19 infections, which mostly affected those assigned in administrative sections.
These include the mandatory wearing of face mask and face shield and observance of safe physical distancing among their personnel and those visiting police officers and stations.
PRO-12 had mandated the health screening and quarantine of new detainees as well as the observance of health protocols in detention cells.
“We’re constantly reminding our personnel to properly comply with the protocols and related measures for personal protection and of their colleagues and families as well,” he added.
Last month, two police stations here –San Isidro and Makar– were placed on lockdown for several days after a number of their personnel and detainees came out positive of Covid-19.
An outbreak at the city jail three weeks ago was traced to infected detainees who were transferred from the San Isidro police station.
Over 30 personnel assigned under the city police office contracted the disease in May alone as the area recorded a surge of locally-transmitted cases.(PNA)
