CEBU CITY – The chief of the Army Reserve Command (Arescom) on Tuesday commended the Army reservists in Central Visayas for serving in various capacities during the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
Maj. Gen. Peale Jon Bondoc, Arescom chief, said the relevance of the reserve force has been brought into fore during the pandemic, with reservists volunteering to assist local authorities in imposing quarantine restrictions to the communities.
“There are a lot of issues and problems in administering and, of course, in making our reserve force relevant. The President himself has been emphasizing about where are the reserve, we should employ them,” Bondoc said during the awarding of Bronze Cross Medal to the members of the 1901st Infantry Brigade Ready Reserve and the 701st Cebu Ready Reserve Battalion.
University professor, Lt. Col. Antonio Esmero and Private Paulo Garcia III, son of Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, led other reservists in receiving the award.
The reservists were cited for performing various tasks at the height of the pandemic in Cebu from March to August of 2020.
Some of them repacked relief goods at the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Visayas Disaster Relief Center in Mandaue, others assisted local police in manning quarantine control points while a few helped in decontamination efforts.
“So, there here’s the emphasis indeed the reserve force has a relevant role not only in calamities, in pandemic, but of course, in the nation building,” Bondoc said in his speech.
The Arescom commander said his office has been finding ways to fine-tune the reservist program of the country, underscoring the effort to mirror the structure of ready reserve units in different provinces of the country to the regular military.
The event at the 7th Regional Community Defense Group at Camp Lapu-Lapu in this city also highlighted the donning of rank of Lt. Col. Emmarie Ouano-Dizon, a representative of Cebu’s 6th District who was newly commissioned into the Army reserve.
She thanked the Armed Forces of the Philippines for the opportunity to wear the uniform in serving the republic through the reserve force. (PNA)
