DA distributes P1.5-M aid to ASF-affected hog raisers

MANILA – The Department of Agriculture (DA) has so far covered over PHP1.5 million worth of indemnification fund to hog raisers affected by the African swine fever (ASF).

On Tuesday, Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) Director Reildren Morales said the total amount distributed to 37,675 affected hog raisers reached PHP1,554,889 as of June 4.

The DA is still conducting operations to record and distribute the amount for the rest of the affected hog farmers which already reached a total of 64,704.

In the virtual briefing, Morales said the government will have a better grip of the situation in two or three years.

“The outcome of all our efforts to eradicate the spread of ASF will bear fruits in the coming years. We will have a good handle on the situation in two to three years. As of now, our counterparts in the regional level are monitoring the high-risk areas, our surveillance activities are the most vital now,” he said.

Meanwhile, Morales said at least 10 farms in Luzon are being studied for the trial run of the ASF vaccines.

“If these go well, the next step of the government is to mass vaccinate the high-risk areas,” he added.

On May 8, Agriculture Secretary William Dar said in a Laging Handa press briefer the DA is closely monitoring the studies on the efficacy of the anti-parasitic drug ivermectin as well as two other products.

He said the BAI, hog raisers, and academes are testing these products against ASF which are expected to yield results in three months. (PNA
