SAN FABIAN, Pangasinan – Two men died on Tuesday afternoon after being struck by lightning in Barangay Angio in this town.
In an interview on Wednesday, Lingayen police investigator Cpl. Froilan Jovellanos identified the victims as Fernando Guntang, 20, construction worker and a resident of Barangay Angio here, and Jeric Soriano, 25, a resident of Barangay Pangapisan North in Lingayen town.
“They were struck by lightning while inside a nipa hut in the middle of the rice field. They were brought to a nearby hospital but were declared dead on arrival,” he said.
Jovellanos said one of the victims sustained burns in his chest and in the area where his cellular phone was found.
“The two were working on the irrigation canal in the field when the rain started so they sheltered together with their two companions in a nipa hut, which they just finished constructing. One of the victims was playing a mobile game and allegedly when he pocketed his phone, that’s when the lightning struck them,” he said.
He added their two companions were unharmed.
Jovellanos urged the public to stay indoors during a thunderstorm. (PNA)
