MANILA – Winners of #PinoyInnovator TikTok challenge, a contest made by this social media platform in partnership with the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD), were announced.

Of the 92 entries, student Jeremy de Leon won the competition for his PHP35 microscope, said PCIEERD executive director Enrico Paringit in an interview with the Philippine News Agency on Tuesday.

“The innovation made by Mr. de Leon (will give hope to) our students and teachers at home who would like to do science exploration while being at home. We saw in his project the ingenuity of our Filipino researchers, scientists, and engineers and his skill in conveying his message to the audience in a clear and understandable manner,” he said.

The #PinoyInnovator challenge aims to test the ingenuity of Filipinos, as they would have to develop a gadget using household items. De Leon used lenses from a laser, a hairclip, and a mobile phone.

Paringit said the 92 entries were shortlisted into 22 entries. #PinoyInnovator videos garnered some 85.3 million views, according to Paringit.

He said the winners were announced on June 21. The prizes will be provided by TikTok at the end of the month, he added.

De Leon will receive PHP20,000 for his creation, and another PHP5,000 for placing fourth for creating a flashlight microscope-projector using his mobile phone, laser lenses, and a flashlight.

The other winners are:

* First runner-up: Temperature Check for Door Security
* Second runner-up: DIY Fumigator
* Third runner-up: Loading Tray for Packages

A PHP15,000 prize awaits the first runner-up, while the second and third runners-up will get PHP5,000 each. PCIEERD will provide the trophies and certificates.

“We thank TikTok for this partnership as we are able to tap into the innovativeness of our Filipino netizens. We look forward to more meaningful collaborations with TikTok and with other social networking sites as we move to reach more Filipinos, here and around the world,” Paringit said.

PCIEERD and TikTok collaborated earlier this year to popularize research and development through series of training and launching contests. (PNA
