MANILA — Former president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino died on Thursday, June 24, 2021.
He was 61.
According to reports, Aquino had been suffering from various illnesses three years after stepping down from power in 2016.
Pnoy, as he preferred to be called during his office tenure from 2010-2016, had been undergoing dialysis for at least five months and had recently undergone a major heart operation reports say.
Pnoy rode a wave of goodwill following the death of former president Cory Aquino even as his promise of “Daang Matuwid” (straight and honest path) political platform paved the way for his family’s return to power as PH’s 15th president.
His passing was confirmed by his 2010 running-mate and former Interior secretary Manuel Roxas.
“PNoy RIP (rest in peace). [He] was rushed to (the) hospital early this morning (Thursday) and passed after efforts to revive (him) failed. Please pray for him. Salamat (Thank you),” Roxas said in a statement.
Initial reports said Aquino was brought to the Capitol Medical Center in Quezon City early Thursday for undisclosed reasons.
