LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu – In what could be another political somersault, Presidential spokesman Harry Roque on Tuesday said, President Rodrigo Duterte now wanted his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, to run for president in 2022.
The presidential mouthpiece bared this as he took a jab on Senator Manny Pacquiao for being unable to wait for the President’s endorsement.
“Di nakaantay si Senator Pacquiao (Senator Pacquiao could not wait for endorsement),” Roque quipped.
However, recent news broke that Pacquiao and Duterte had clashed over the issue of Chinese incursion in the West Philippine Sea.
Pacquiao had refuted Duterte’s statement that he should educate himself more about the Philippines’ foreign policy before commenting on Chinese incursions in the West Philippine Sea.
The senator said while he respected Duterte’s opinion, he “humbly disagrees” with the President’s “assessment of my understanding of foreign policy.”
“I firmly believe that my statement reflects the sentiment of the majority of the Filipinos, that we should stand strong in protecting our sovereign rights while pursuing a peaceful and diplomatic solution to the dispute,” the senator said in a statement.
Roque said it was Inday Sara who does not want to run for president.
He refused to answer if Duterte wants Pacquiao ousted from PDP-Laban but instead hinted that the President does not have longstanding ties with the political party.
“He recognizes that PDP-Laban is the Pimentel family’s party,” Roque said.
Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III earlier declared that Pacquiao is a good choice for a PDP-Laban’s presidential bet in 2022 polls. (AI/MTVN)
