LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Who’s not afraid of Digong Duterte?

This question swirled following the announcement of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Thursday to consider him a candidate for the vice presidential race in 2022 and Senator Grace Poe could put up a good fight.

“Among the organizations in 1Sambayan, there are some groups [that] really still feel she (Poe) would make a good vice president, if not president,” said Bro. Armin Luistro, former Education secretary and one of the convenors of the anti-Duterte coalition 1Sambayan.

Luistro issued the statement after Poe, one of six nominees of the coalition, declined the nomination of 1Sambayan on June 12 for a possible presidential bid.

But in an earlier interview, Poe had expressed openness to run for vice president.

It can be recalled that Poe, who ran as an independent candidate, finished third in the 2016 presidential race, behind Duterte, and former interior secretary Mar Roxas, then the standard-bearer of the Liberal Party (LP).

On Thursday, July 1, Duterte said that he is considering a vice presidential bid in 2022 to avoid being a lame duck during his last year in office.

“Alam mo ‘yun… as a lame duck, posturing ‘yan. Political posturing so that they will not treat you badly,” the President said in a speech during the inauguration of the LRT2 East Extension Project.

“To maintain the equilibrium, consider me as a candidate for (the) vice presidency,” Duterte further said.

Sources said the faction of Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi in PDP-Laban will vigorously push for the approval of the tandem of Senator Bong Go and Duterte in the upcoming July 17 national assembly of the ruling party.

House Majority Leader and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez also retreated from his expected vice presidential bid, saying it will not be a good option to run for vice president if Duterte or his cousin former senator Bongbong Marcos will likewise vie for the post.

The same sources, however, said Marcos will push for his “now or never” presidential bid in 2022.

They also predicted that Senate President Tito Sotto will give way to Poe’s possible vice presidential bid and team up with Senator Manny Pacquiao as standard bearer to square off with the Go-Duterte tandem. (AI/MTVN)
