LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu – Just like a bloodied warrior fighting for his dear life, Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III has assailed a faction in the PDP-Laban that was founded by his late father for pushing for the presidential candidacy of a party outsider.
Pimentel chided the faction headed by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi for “hiding behind the popularity” of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in order to ram through their alleged hidden agenda.
“It is now obvious to us that their ultimate plan is to gift the PDP-Laban’s nomination for president of the Republic of the Philippines in the 2022 elections to someone who does not belong to the party, that is, to a party outsider,” Pimentel fumed, apparently alluding to presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.
On May 31, Cusi presided over the PDP-Laban’s national council meeting in Cebu City without the approval of Senator Manny Pacquiao who is the president of the ruling party.
Pimentel noted that Cusi failed to disclose valid authority from Duterte who was named chairman of the ruling party by virtue of having won the presidency using the PDP-Laban as his vehicle in 2016.
Cusi did not coordinate and fix the agenda with Pacquiao which is a supposed requirement under the party constitution.
The PDP-Laban was founded by the late Senator Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel Jr. which has been advocating federalism ever since.
Some political analysts said the scheduled July 17 national assembly of PDP-Laban will be either a “coronation of Sara Duterte” or the “purging of the Cusi faction” while Pacquiao is busy with his training in the US for his August 21 fight with the undefeated Errol Spence Jr. (ai/mtvn)
