LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu – Apparently fearing that he would become an “inutile” vice president, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Wednesday, July 7, endorsed Senator Bong Go as the standard-bearer of the ruling PDP-Laban.
“I am seriously thinking of running for vice president. If I run for vice president and the elected president is not a friend, the situation would arise where I would remain an inutile thing there,” Duterte told his party mates in a meeting where noticeably absent were Senators Koko Pimentel and Manny Pacquiao.
Koko is the executive vice-chairman and son of the late Sen. Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel Jr. who founded the PDP-Laban while Pacquiao is the president who is now training in the United States for his boxing bout with undefeated Errol Spence Jr. in August 21, 2021
“Ito ang dilemma ko (This is my dilemma). The president who will win must be a friend of mine whom I can work with,” Duterte admitted.
He then endorsed Go who quickly declined the presidential anointment but hinted at the possibility.
“Consider me last. I am not interested in running for the presidency dahil alam ko mahirap talaga ‘yung trabaho (because I know the job is difficult),” Go said.
But his parting shot was ominous: “’Yung tira na lang po ‘yung sa akin, kung wala na kayong mahanap.”
Despite his “Jele jele, bago quiere” style, Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan and Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Michael Dino expressed strong support for the Go presidential bid.
“Jele jele, bago quiere” is a colloquial term which means a person may try to say that they don’t want something but in truth, they want it as much but want more prodding or convincing from the person offering before finally agreeing.
Political analysts said presidential daughter and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio may still run for president with the backing of five national political parties – the National Unity Party (NUP), Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), Nacionalista Party, Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) and the People’s Reform Party (PRP).
A source from Dagan Day Sara (DDS) said Sara’s running mate will be former Defense Secretary Gibo Teodoro while another pro-Sara group Alyansa ng mga Samahan para sa Pagbabago (ASAP) source claimed that former Senator Bongbong Marcos will be her vice-presidential teammate.
Pacquiao may team up with Senator Grace Poe and the Liberal Party (LP) may settle for a Bam Aquino-Sonny Trillanes ticket as Vice President Leni Robredo will run for governor of Camarines Sur, political observers said. (AI/MTVN)
