LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — The die is cast, so to speak, as Senators Panfilo “Ping” Lacson and Vicente “Tito” Sotto III finally confirmed on Tuesday that they are running for president and vice president, respectively, for the 2022 polls.
Saying that they are the alternative, Sotto stressed that he and Lacson would not identify themselves as pro-administration candidates or opposition bets.
“We’re neutral… It’s up to the people to pick who they want, who they should vote for,” the erstwhile movie comedian and ‘Eat Bulaga’ host said.
Sotto has his roots from vote-rich Cebu, with the biggest government hospital named after his grandfather, the late Sen. Vicente Sotto who was the main author of the Press Freedom Law (now known as the Sotto Law, Republic Act No. 53) enacted in 1946 which protects journalists from being compelled to name their news sources.
Lacson and Sotto have earlier launched consultative meetings with local officials and various sectors.
As early as June, Sotto had declared that he will “definitely” team up with Lacson for the 2022 elections.
Sotto claimed that their decision to run for president and vice president was motivated by their “love of country.”
Apparently, Sotto appeared not to be joking even with the prospect of facing a formidable opponent like President Rodrigo Roa Duterte — who is fond of making jokes — in the vice presidential race. (AI/MTVN)
