Slain radio commentator Rey Cortes

LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — Known for his criticisms against some local officials, radio commentator Rey Cortes was shot dead Thursday morning outside radio station DYRB in Cebu City after airing his “Engkwentro” program.
Cortes was dead on arrival at the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) where he was rushed by fellow radio blocktimer Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak.
Tumulak said Cortes had just finished his radio program at 8:30 a.m. and the Cebu City councilor then took over.
But during Tumulak’s program, two men approached him to inform him that Cortes was shot.
Police said Cortes was shot by an unidentified assailant while he was standing outside the radio station. DYRB in Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City past 9 a.m. on Thursday.
It can be recalled that on June 12, 2003, Cortes was shot and wounded in his right thigh while walking to his car outside the Bureau of Customs.
The victim’s wife Kit Matus-Cortes disclosed that her husband was hit on the chest and the bullet went through his left arm.
Tragically, it was Kit’s birthday when Cortes was killed. (ai/mtvn)
