LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu – Cracks in the opposition ranks again surfaced on Thursday as the camp of Vice President Leni Robredo felt insulted with the actuations of former Senator Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV who had warned her and the Liberal Party (LP) that his Magdalo group will not support her if she gives way to Senator Panfilo Lacson in the 2022 presidential race.
Trillanes also said Robredo’s decision to meet up with Lacson undermined the struggles of a fellow lawmaker, detained Senator Leila de Lima.
“Well, first of all, I am insulted that he would even bring that up, ‘di ba. I am insulted at the insinuation that the Vice President has somehow, you know, not done all she can to support Senator Leila de Lima,” Robredo’s spokesperson Barry Gutierrez said as he could not hide his disgust during Thursday’s interview with ABS-CBN News Channel.
He said Trillanes’s assertion is uncalled for as Robredo has been very supportive of the lady senator’s plight.
“If you go through all these last four years ever since Senator Leila was imprisoned, the Vice President has been very consistent in speaking about the unjustness of what happened to Senator Leila,” Gutierrez pointed out.
Apparently, Trillanes was peeved when Robredo separately met with Lacson and Senator Richard Gordon who are both eyeing the presidency.
“VP Leni, I hope this is not true. Pero kung totoo ito, pasensya na po pero the Magdalo Group would not join you and LP kung mag give way kayo para kay Sen. Lacson,” Trillanes warned in his Facebook post.
The former coup plotter who immediately surrendered had earlier presented himself as an alternative presidential candidate of the opposition coalition 1Sambayan if ever Robredo withdraws from the presidential race and runs instead as governor of Camarines Sur. (ai/mtvn)
