LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu – With the recent social media rants of former coup plotter and ex-senator Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV, the much-desired united front of opposition forces to defeat the anticipated Duterte-Duterte tandem in 2022 is on the verge of collapse before it can formally take off.

Trillanes, who now sounds like the “hard-liner” Jose Maria Sison who founded the Maoist-oriented Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) in 1968 but now hiding in The Netherlands for more than 34 years, bitterly assailed Vice President Leni Robredo for meeting with Manila Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso and senators Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, Vicente “Tito” Sotto III and Richard “Dick” Gordon.

“Simula January, ako/Magdalo, and later on through Tindig Pilipinas, ay nagre-request ng meeting kay VP Leni para nga masimulan na ang preparation. Subalit, ayaw niya kaming i-meet dahil kasalanan daw sa Diyos na pag-usapan ang 2022 elections habang may pandemya,” Trillanes said on Facebook on Thursday, July 29.

But Robredo spokesperson Barry Gutierrez chided Trillanes for not directly talking to the Vice President who is the presumptive leader of the opposition.

Gutierrez said private communication – not tweets – would help make clear the issues of Trillanes with Robredo’s recent meetings with other political leaders.

“If I may say so, Senator Trillanes’ concerns, you know, are better addressed with a text message rather than a tweet. If he had questions about kung ano anong pinag-usapan sa meeting, ibig sabihin ba nito ganito ganiyan, then he should have just reached out, ‘di ba,” the Vice President’s mouthpiece said in an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel.

Trillanes had warned Robredo that his Magdalo party would abandon her if she gave way to Senator Panfilo Lacson in the 2022 presidential race. (ai/mtvn)
