MANILA — Team Philippines in the Tokyo Olympics is already guaranteed of a rare gold-silver-bronze medal finish.
This was after Filipino boxer Eumir Marcial prevailed over Armenia’s Arman Darchinyan in the quarterfinal round of the men’s middleweight division.
The win ultimately secured him at least a bronze medal, or you never know, another silver, or better yet, a gold if and when Marcial manages to pull two more earthshaking victories in the Covid-delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Marcial is the second Pinoy boxer to secure a medal after Nesthy Petecio, who is set to fight for Olympic gold on Tuesday, August 3, 2021.
It will be the first time since the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics that the Philippines will bring home at least three medals. The Philippine contingent then won three bronze medals that year.
Last Monday, 26 July 2021, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz ended the Philippines’ 97-year-long quest for the super elusive Olympic gold medal.
A triple gold medal finish this time around might be too big to ask but that’s a big possibility too.
Let’s just keep our fingers crossed. (ai/mtvn)
